AKA the Hero of Bennington
New Hampshire native who served as an officer in the British Army during the French and Indian war and a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He became widely known as the "Hero of Bennington" for his exemplary service at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.
"Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils."
Legend has it that when word of the skirmish at Lexington and Concord reached Manchester, John Stark donned his uniform, saddled his horse and was on his way to Boston within ten minutes, leaving instructions for his neighbors to join him at Medford, Massachusetts where twelve hundred New Hampshire men joined him.
