Battle of Bunker Hill
06/17/1775 AD defeated
Fought during the Siege of Boston the battle is named after Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts, which was the original objective of both the colonial and British troops, though the majority of combat took place on the adjacent hill which later became known as Breed's Hill.
By daybreak, the British realize of the presence of colonial forces on the Peninsula and mount an attack latter that day. Two assaults on the colonial positions are repulsed with significant British casualties; During the third and final attack colonists run out of ammunition and retreat to Cambridge leaving the British in control of the Peninsula.
The battle is a tactical, but Pyrrhic, victory for the British, as they suffered 1054 casualties compared with the colonists 450.
It proves to be a sobering experience for the British: The battle had demonstrated that inexperienced militia are able to stand up to regular army troops in battle. Subsequently, the battle discourages the British from frontal attacks against well defended front lines.
