Teachings of Jesus

Rebuke to Evangelicals

  • Matt 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
  • John 14:13 - whatsoever you ask in my name, That will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. - The phrase, in my NAME means in the way I am teaching you - my way - and that way is meditation:
  • John 5:19 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. he can do nothing of himself and you can do better than he did
  • John 14:13 - whatsoever you ask in my name, That will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. - The phrase, in my NAME means in the way I am teaching you - my way - and that way is meditation:

The words of Jesus himself
  • Luke 17:20-21 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. - i.e. he's not coming back in a way to be seen, because the kingdom is within you, and the kingdom does not come in such a way as to be seen
  • Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and shall be added unto you.all these things
  • Acts 7:48 the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet
  • John 14:19-20 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. - I am in the father, the father in you, and you in me
  • Matt 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. — i.e. if your eye is single you will be filled with light
  • Matt 19:16 - don't call me good what are you calling me good for? - the only thing that is good is the father
    • Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. — i.e.you take away the key because you don't enter within yourself
    • take no thought when you enter the closet and close the door
    • John 14:24 - the word you hear is not mine, it's the father's -
  • John 16:23 - in that day you shall ask me nothing
  • John 16:26 - I'm not going to pray for you
  • John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the father which hath sent me. - I can do nothing except Father's will
  • Luke 18:25 that "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"
    • (Jesus and the rich young man).
    • It also appears in the Qur'an 7:40, "Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them – the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle."
    • According to Wikipedia: "The "Eye of the Needle" has been claimed to be a gate in Jerusalem, which opened after the main gate was closed at night. A camel could not pass through the smaller gate unless it was stooped and had its baggage removed. The story has been put forth since at least the 11th century and possibly as far back as the 9th century. However, there is no widely accepted evidence for the existence of such a gate."
Light out of Darkness
  • Matt 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. not direct quote
  • John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
  • 1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the councils of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Meditation in OT
  • Daniel 2:22 He reveals the deep and secret things: he knows what is in the darkness, and the light lives with him.
  • Amos 5:18 You that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.
  • Amos 5:20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
  • Micah 7:8 Rejoice not against me, my enemy: when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me.
  • Isaiah 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do for them, and not forsake them.

  • Job 22:12 And you say. How does God know? can he judge through the darkness?

Tithing

  • Tithe means 10. From the Old Testament into the New, the admonition is to tithe.
  • First mentioned involving Melchizedek and Abram in Genesis 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
    • Hebrews 6:20 ... even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
    • The tithing goes to someone or something that is not human, and certainly not the church:
      • Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
      • Hebrews 7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is King of Peace;
      • Hebrews 7:3 Without mother , without father, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abides a priest continually.
    • And, the story of Abraham is allegory according to Galatians 4:24
    • Do not tithe to people or churches etc:
      • Hebrews 7:6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
      • Hebrews 7:8 And here men that die receive tithes; ...

Why is there suffering?
  • If you're "Religious" how do you explain suffering
  • Bart - "There are powers of evil that are beyond our comprehension.."
  • Free Will "If you didn't have free will, you couldn't love God willingly - If you didn't have free will you'd be a robot - God didn't want robots
    • If you can freely love God, then you can freely hate hate him
    • So you can choose to love or hate - so there has to be suffering
    • So you go to heaven and have free will? yes - but there is no suffering - doh!!
Why are there proteges?

Rapture

Learn a lot from ReligionForBreakfast, The Origins of the Rapture:

  • 1 Thes 4:16-17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump[et] of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then wewhich are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Thessalonianians was written by Paul to a church that was concerned that the return of the Lord had not happened yet. And some members had already died! So Paul was trying to comfort them - "Don't worry, you'll all be fine - even those who have died".

The word meet in Thessalonians is the Greek word apantesis, defined as *the act of going out to meet a dignitary or monarch from another city". According to Helmet Koester and seconded by Bart, we essentially have a delegation going out to receive the Lord, and then escort him back down to the earth.

Others think some Christians will be able to fly by then - based largely on a misguided reading of

  • Isaiah 60:8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

which is not about people flying, but rather about the sails on the ships of Tarshish, mentioned in the next verse.

This belief comes from multiple ancient Jewish interpretations (eg Talmud, Shemot Rabbah 51.8, Midrash Tehillim 48.4, Midrash Tanhuma Tzav 12) however: Basically, that Jerusalem will float in the clouds - but all of these are much later than Paul's epistle to the Thessalonians

In any case, this is not a rapture but rather a resurrection event similar to

  • 1 Cor 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

AlasNoMe: Focus & Believe

  • Matt 5:37 [L]et your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. i.e. Let your 'yes' be 'yes', and your 'no' be 'no', anything else comes from adversary.

What/Who is God?

defined four places in Bible:

  • Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield:the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

    • not the prime creator but demiurge
  • Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
  • 1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
  • 1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
I am & the Eternal

The prominent thinker Joseph Campbell taught that "the eternal" has nothing to do with time (past or future) but is a dimension of the present moment, the "now". Campbell (and the earlier theologian R.J. Campbell) held a view where the eternal is a state of being or consciousness that transcends time rather than being a part of it:

  • Joseph Campbell (mythologist) famously stated, "Eternity is not future or past. Eternity is a dimension of now". In his view, time is what "shuts you out" from eternity. Experiencing eternity is an "ecstatic experience of pure being" accessible in the present moment, often through art, deep insight, or profound personal connections, where the past and future dissolve.
  • Reginald John Campbell (theologian) — a British divine (1867-1956) — associated with the "New Theology," also discussed concepts of the "eternal principle" and the "eternal ideal Christ". His theological views emphasized the immanence of God and an evolving spiritual consciousness, but even in this context, the "eternal" referred to an underlying, unchanging essence, not merely a past duration of time.

Corrections to King James Version
  • 1 Sam 17:4 A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span → the Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls, and other early sources generally cite his height as four cubits and a span.
  • 2 Sam 21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. → A scribe sought to fix the inconsistency in the earlier texts wherein Goliath was killed twice by two different people
  • Matt 23:14 Seven woes of Matthew 23 Woe ... ye devour widows' houses ... The numerical symbolism of repeating something seven times is important "The King James Version and some other translations list eight woes in Matthew 23, but older manuscripts leave out verse 14, ...; most likely, however, Matthew did not include them among the other woes of chapter 23." → What are the seven woes of Matthew 23?
  • Matt 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall... The original is wine, but likely changed by scribes to satisfy the prophecy in Psalms 69:21: They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar to quench my thirst.
  • Mark 1:41 And Jesus, moved with compassion(splangnistheis) ... reads as Jesus became irritated/angry(orgistheis) in Codex Bezae, Codex Corbeiensis II, and others. Which is correct? Well, Jesus is more angry in Mark than the other Gospels and it is less likely that the original was compassion and was changed to be more perjorative, so I think angry is the more likely original.

  • Mark 16:9-20 Long Ending of Mark: This portion of Mark's Gospel is not considered by most authorities to be in the original. Most English translations mark this section with brackets and note that our earliest and most reliable manuscripts do not contain it.
  • Luke 23:33-34 Forgiveness on the Cross: And when they came to the place that is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. → Missing from the earliest Greek copy, Papyrus 75, but appears in Codex Sinaticus - scholars debate whether it was originally there in earlier lost texts; possibly removed for anti-Semitic reasons or perhaps added to make the bible appeal more to Romans. Will likely never know. Also, other versions name the place The Skull, rather than Calvary.
  • John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us... according to Godard this should be and dwelt in us - check a concordence!!
  • John 7:53—8:11 The Missing Adulteress (Pericope Adulterae): ... "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." ... "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more." Most scholars, including conservatives, agree that this story was not originally in John's Gospel.
  • 1 John 5:7-8 Johannine Comma: "For there are three that testify: in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree." Most scholars, even very conservative ones, conclude that this section was not in the original writing.
  • "There are some incredibly significant issues in the Greek text behind the Byzantine family of Greek manuscripts, especially the KJV (Textus Receptus) that were not in the original manuscripts. We have John 7:58-8:11. • Although Irenaeus (second century) reported several scribal errors of the number, there is still doubt by some theologians about the original reading, as some recently discovered third century early manuscripts of Revelation read 616. This topic is a source of contention for many church groups and theologians. Some scholars contend that the number 666 is a code for the Roman Emperor Nero, others that 616 is a code for the Roman Emperor Caligula. → Bill Donahue, 666 Book of Revelation
  • In May 2005 it was reported that scholars at Oxford University using advanced imaging techniques had been able to read previously illegible portions of the earliest know record of the Book of Revelation. Chapter 20 Satan Bound

Here we find Satan bound for a thousand years. The 1000 stands for 1 meaning God, and the zeros representing eternal nothingness. Furthermore, the year is a fig for 12 which alludes to the 12 sympathetic nerves, or the human psyche. Taken together, we have the chaos Satan — the carnal — held at bay while we are meditating. And, when we come out of our meditation - after the 1000 years - Satan shall be loosed out of his prison. The carnal thoughts come rushing back.
