Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way — Also known as Westward Ho, Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's 1861 mural symbolizes Manifest Destiny. It is painted behind the western staircase of the House of Representatives and measures 20-by-30-feet (6.1 m × 9.1 m).
