Mount Vesuvius Erupts

Thousands are killed, when the longtime dormant volcano erupts just after noon, burying the Roman settlements of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae.
The mushroom cloud of ash and molten pumice spewed 10 miles up into the atmosphere, and then rained down on Pompeii for twelve hours.
