Whiskey Rebellion begins
03/04/1791 AD rioted

A tax protest primarily among farmers in Western Pennsylvania

The tax on whiskey was bitterly and fiercely opposed on the frontier from the day it was passed. Western farmers considered it to be both unfair and discriminatory. As the Lower Mississippi River had been closed to American shipping for nearly a decade, farmers in western Pennsylvania were forced to turn their grain into whiskey.

The Whiskey Rebellion, or WhiskeyInsurrection, is often portrayed as alocal riot over a tax on Whiskey. Thisis only partially true; while the en-forcement action took place in onearea – western Pennsylvania – oppo-sition to the tax occurred in the west-ern regions of every state from Penn-sylvania to Georgia, and the state ofKentucky. And whilethis article focuses onevents in Pennsylva-nia, there were interna-tional intrigues that fartranscended Whiskey, and reached into theWashington adminis-tration itself. The Whis-key Rebellion involvedconcepts of governmentthat are still debated tothis day. Many of theissues raised duringthe event would resur-face 67 years later inthe American “CivilWar”.
