Columbus Sets Sail
08/03/1492 AD departed
With three ships, the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Santa Clara (nicknamed the Niña), Columbus began his first voyage to the New World. The trip was financed by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. The monarchs also forced the citizens of Palos to contribute to the expedition.
Columbus negotiated a fantastic deal which included 10 percent of all revenues from the new lands, options on any business ventures, and the rank of Admiral of the Ocean Sea and governorship of all the new lands he could claim for Spain.
