The Conclave was difficult. lasting more than five and a half months with seven cardinals in attendance: Three belonged to the Angevin faction, and three opposed it.
Cardinal Simon de Brion was still in France as papal legate. The only surviving Cardinal-Bishop, the Benedictine Bertrand de Saint Martin, wavered back and forth, providing little leadership.
