Josephus (Person) AKA Titus Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu
Josephus
37 AD - 100 AD
AKA Titus Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu
An historian and scholar of Jewish descent, who after fighting against the Romans until 67 BC surrendered to and ultimately defected to the Roman side.
Josephus wrote all of his surviving works after his establishment in Rome (c. AD 71) under the patronage of the Flavian Emperor Vespasian. As is common with ancient texts, however, there are no known manuscripts of Josephus' works that can be dated before the 11th century, and the oldest which do survive were copied by Christian monks. Jews are not known to have preserved the writings of Josephus perhaps because he was considered a traitor, and/or because his works circulated in Greek, the use of which declined among Jews shortly after Josephus' era. → Wikipedia, Josephus on Jesus
