Maria Amalia, Holy Roman Empress
1701 AD - 1756 AD
AKA Maria Amalia of Austria
- Holy Roman Empress, Queen consort of Germany as wife of Emperor Charles VII 1742 – 1745
- Queen consort of Bohemia 1741 – 1743
- Austrian archduchess by birth
- House Habsburg
When Maria Amalia was nine-years-old, her father died of smallpox and was succeeded by his brother Emperor Charles VI. Charles ignored a decree signed during the reign of his and Joseph's father, Emperor Leopold I, that gave Maria Amali and her sister Maria Josepha precedence in succession as the daughters of Leopold's eldest son.
Instead, he promulgated the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, which replaced Maria Amalia and Maria Josepha with his own daughter Maria Theresa in the line of succession.
The displaced archduchesses were not allowed to marry until they renounced their rights to the Austrian succession.
