He was known as "Father of the Northwest Territory," which is present-day Ohio,
The town of Putnam, Ohio (now a part of Zanesville, Ohio) was named for him. Fort Putnam (built by Rufus Putnam) is part of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
The Rufus Putnam Award, is the highest award given by The Grand Lodge of Ohio. It was established to recognize individuals who have rendered distinguished service in some field of endeavor beneficial to mankind.
