Al-Jawad died at the age of 25, which was the shortest life among Shia Imams. According to some sources, he, like his father, was poisoned at the urging of al-Mu'tasim, by his wife, Umma al-Fadhl. He was buried beside his grandfather, Musa al-Kadhim, in the Maghabir Ghoraysh, which later became known as Kadhimiya.
