07/13/1843 AD married

On May 10, 1843, after seven years, Longfellow received a letter from Fanny Appleton agreeing to marry him.

He was too restless to take a carriage and walked 90 minutes to meet her at her house in Beacon Hill.

They were soon married; Nathan Appleton bought the Craigie House as a wedding present, and Longfellow lived there for the rest of his life.

They would have six children:

  • Charles Appleton (1844–1893)
  • Ernest Wadsworth (1845–1921)
  • Fanny (1847–1848)
  • Alice Mary (1850–1928)
  • Edith (1853–1915)
  • Anne Allegra (1855–1934).

Their second-youngest daughter was Edith who married Richard Henry Dana III, son of Richard Henry Dana, Jr. who wrote Two Years Before the Mast.

Their daughter Fanny was born on April 7, 1847, and Dr. Nathan Cooley Keep administered ether to the mother as the first obstetric anesthetic in the United States.
