Plutarch gives two somewhat conflicting accounts:
- He was killed by a solder infurriated that he would not leave the math he was doing to see his general (last words:Do not disturb my circles")
- A soldier thinking that his mathematical instruments were valuable, killed him as he was trying to surrender
