06/02/1953 AD crowned

The ceremony in Westminster Abbey, with the exception of the anointing and communion, was televised for the first time.

Television coverage of the coronation was instrumental in boosting the medium's popularity; the number of television licenses in the United Kingdom doubled to 3 million, and many of the more than 20 million British viewers watched television for the first time in the homes of their friends or neighbors.

In North America, just under 100 million viewers watched recorded broadcasts.

Elizabeth's coronation gown was embroidered on her instructions with the floral emblems of Commonwealth countries.
