Friedrich Wilhelm dies in the postal station, on the way back from his marriage in St. Petersburg
The cause of death was uncertain - it has been attributed variously to a chill or to the effects of alcohol.
His widow Anna, together with his corpse, arrive in Mitau only on 4 March.
After his death, the Duchy passed to Ferdinand Kettler, but was de facto controlled by Russia.
