Kepler Conjecture: Optimal Sphere Packing?
01/01/1611 AD published
Kepler publishes On the Six-Cornered Snowflake, the first work to analyze the structure of crystals. The most famous result was his (only recently proved) conjecture on the maximum packing density of spheres.
He had been studying arrangements of spheres since Thomas Harriot posed the question of how to best stack cannonballs on ships in 1606.
