Kepler's Epiphany
07/19/1595 AD discovered
While teaching the cycle of the great conjunctions of Jupiter and Saturn, Kepler realized that this periodicity traced a circle inscribed in the triangles.
He thought that the ratio of the inscribed circle to the outer circle might be related to the ratio of the orbits of the planets
He extended the idea by inscribing successive regular polygons.
When this didn't work, he further realized that he needed to use solids in spheres rather than polygons in circles and this led to his bookMysterium Cosmographicum which was publish a year later.
