Galvani discovers Animal Electricity
1780 AD discovered
While skinning a frog where he and his wife had been experimenting with static electricity by rubbing frog skin, they saw sparks and the dead frog's leg kick as if alive when an exposed sciatic nerve was touched with a metal scalpel (that had picked up a charge).
Galvani coins the term animal electricity to describe the force that activates the muscles of animals. Along with contemporaries, he regards their activation as being generated by an electrical fluid that is carried to the muscles by the nerves. He furtheri believea that the animal electricity comes from the muscle in its pelvis.
