Methane is the simplest hydrocarbon, consisting of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms.

On Lake Maggiore alongside the reeds, Volta pokes the muddy lake bottom producing bubbles floating up to the surface. After collecting samples he discovers the gas is inflammable. He creatively calls it inflammable air from marshlands: Now known as methane.
