Stanley builds First practical AC transformer
1885 AD built
Based on Lucien Gaulard and John Dixon Gibbs' prototype of 1881 but with significant improvements:
Stanley had each coil operate independently of the others in circuit and be self-regulating, both in electromotive force, and current transformed. He further improved the enclosure of the coils by making the core of E-shaped plates, permitting separate winding and thus better insulation of the coils. This device was the precursor to the modern transformer.
